Do I Need a Website for My Small Business? (Or Is Social Media Enough?)

It's a question we hear a lot and the answer is NOT ALWAYS!

If all your customers find you through Instagram or Facebook and you're booking out your diary or selling out your products you might not need a website yet.

Don't spend money on something you don't need. That's not the advice you'd expect from a web design company, but it's the truth.

So when does a website actually start to matter? Here are a few signs it might be time:

When people look you up on Google

If someone searches your business name and finds nothing or an old page that looks out of date, they might assume you're no longer trading. You don't get a chance to explain. It's a silent way to lose customers you never even knew you had.

When you want new customers to find you

Most people don't scroll social media when they need a plumber, a hairdresser or a florist. They search on Google. If you're not there, someone else is. Social media is brilliant for the people who already follow you; it's not always great at bringing in people who have never heard of you.

When you want to be taken seriously

A website is your shop front for anyone who doesn't already know you. It's where people go to check you're real, see what you offer and decide whether to trust you.

When you want to own something

On social media, you're renting space. The platform controls what people see and how far your posts reach. A website is something you actually own and control, a home for your business that isn't at the mercy of a changing algorithm.

So, do you need one?

The honest answer is that you might not need a website yet.

A website doesn't replace your social media, it works alongside it. It gives you credibility, a place to send people and something you fully control as your business grows.
